Sustainability
Gilead operates in many communities around the world. We believe our impact should be positive, enriching and sustainable. Our goal is to promote efforts that minimize our effect on climate change and lower our consumption of natural resources. We seek to increase renewable energy use and recycling efforts, lessen our contribution to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve chemistry practices. Sustainability is core to how we are working to build a better world with people, partners and communities around the globe.
To make good on our commitment to sustainability, Gilead has joined the world’s leading companies to reduce GHG emissions. Climate change presents a material threat to human health and environments worldwide. Gilead is committed to mitigating our impact by doing our part to improve our environmental practices though conservation and pollution prevention. This includes our Science Based Target to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 46% by 2030 from a 2019 base year, and also to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 15% over the same timeframe.
Protecting the environment is a priority of Gilead Sciences Hellas and we pursue it every day.
Energy consumption and emissions
At the heart of our environmental strategy is our aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2025, compared to our base year of 2016. We have carbon-neutralized all of our employees' air travel by enhancing actions that contribute to the conservation of non-renewable resources. In addition to the 50 to 60 tons produced each year from our participation in local conferences from promotional materials, transport and accommodation of staff and customers, we also proceeded with carbon neutralization with targeted actions. We also bundle orders and shipments to private sector customers so as to drastically minimize the use of transport means.
Waste management and recycling
We provide digital solutions, significantly reducing the use of paper. We have consolidated our invoice mailings reducing the use of courier services, the use of letterhead and envelopes and the use of photocopy paper. In our contacts with customers, we proceeded to use digital promotional materials (e-details) with the use of tablets, reducing the consumption of paper to a minimum. For the few printed materials we create, we use exclusively recycled or FSC certified paper.
